The city we actually work out of

St. Charles is Missouri’s first state capital and the oldest city on the Missouri River, and the modern city has grown around a handful of very busy corridors. I-70 cuts across the north end and carries the traffic between here and St. Louis over the Blanchette Bridge. 1st Capitol Drive — where our office is — runs through the middle. Highway 94 heads south toward Weldon Spring, Highway 370 and the Discovery Bridge connect east toward I-270, and Zumbehl, Fifth Street and Kingshighway carry most of the local traffic in between.

Historic Main Street, Frontier Park, the Katy Trail trailhead, Lindenwood University and the Ameristar all sit inside a few square miles, which means a lot of traffic from people who do not know the roads well. That produces a particular mix of calls.

What goes wrong in St. Charles

Main Street and the historic district. Narrow brick streets, limited parking, and visitors in unfamiliar vehicles. Lockouts and dead batteries dominate, and access for a truck is genuinely tight — which is why knowing the district matters.

Event parking. Frontier Park, the riverfront and the casino generate clusters of calls after events: batteries flattened by hours of lights or accessories, and keys locked in cars in a hurry.

Winter on the river bluffs. The grades down toward the river ice before the flats do, and the first freeze of the season reliably produces winch-out calls.

Roughly 165,000 vehicles a day cross the Blanchette Bridge on I-70 — the busiest bridge in the region. Every tow company based in St. Louis County has that bridge between its trucks and your breakdown, and at rush hour or after an incident it is the difference between twenty minutes and an hour and a half.
